The massive online auctioning and shopping site, eBay, has recently announced that it has acquired Where, a geolocation service and developer of location-based mobile applications, to expand its service offering to businesses.

The move has moved it into position to be a contender in the geolocation scene currently populated by Foursquare and Facebook Places. The mobile-ready service is largely used as an anywhere/anytime access point to local ads and deals, and in that respect, eBay is moving into the realm of Groupon with the addition of the Where consumer app.

The acquisition is one of many that eBay has made in recent years. It has also acquired Milo, a industry-specific search service for brick-and-mortar stores, and GSI Commerce, an e-commerce marketing service.
