We all know that Google will routinely do updates, but did you know updates happen 500 to 600 times every year?! The majority of them go completely unnoticed, but big ones, like this last one, can leave you in the dust.

Here is what we know:

This most recent update was different than the daily updates that happen. This was a core update. Changes to key rankings have been detected but we don’t know exactly what they are yet. There is no simple fix but making your website exactly what the user is looking for won’t hurt. This is based greatly on content and you need that in order to keep your rankings.

This update is a Broad Core Algorithm Update and these only happen a few times a year. These are all significant changes to the core of their structure. The daily updates are just small fixes based around this core. If your site has dropped further down the page this does not mean your site is worse in Google’s eyes, but it does mean other sites were better and are finally reaping the reward, which unfortunately pushes you down. This update was designed to help under-ranked sites and there isn’t much you can do to fix your site.

Helping your SEO comes down to content. Make better content. This is a hard thing because, really, what is better? Does this count as better? There is no real answer but to keep trying different things until you find something that fits.

This update hasn’t influenced all sites but those it has, it seems dramatic. This update has influenced local and organic ranking. The other kinds of sights that have been greatly affected are those that give financial advice. Pages written by true experts are going to do better. If this is your field, make sure you have accurate and quality content.
