The Answer? Both! In most cases, you can’t even get sales unless you have security. With scams on the rise and people being exploited daily on the internet, most people know to look for signs that your site is not only a legitimate business but that it is secure. No one wants to give out important information over the internet without the signs that it is going to be secure.
As cyber security awareness rises more and more people are aware of the red flags of an online scam or an insecure site. We’re not talking, Oh maybe this site is too big, or This site is too small, but, Oh this site does not have an SSL! This site redirects me to another site that looks phishy!
This brings us to the SSL. The SSL is an extremely affordable and necessary tool to bring legitimacy to your site and give your customer the confidence that your site is protecting them and their business.
What does an SSL do?
When you send information over the internet it goes between computers ensuring it gets to the final server. Every computer that your information passes threw can see your sensitive information if it is not encrypted with an SSL certificate. This includes usernames, passwords, and credit card numbers. You should never be buying anything from any site that does not have one, and if you don’t have one getting one will help with your online legitimacy. You pretty much have to have one if you have an online store of any kind.
Are there any downsides to having an SSL?
You do have to pay for it, but an SSL is a worthy investment in terms of ROI if you consider how many people will not do business with you if you do NOT have one.
It can cause your site to be slightly slower because it is taking extra time and resources to encrypt everything being sent, but it is well worth that extra 5 seconds to ensure everyone is safe!
On a major plus side, having an SSL is good for your SEO, helps keep you (not just your customers) secure.
Keep in mind as well that it is rumored the Chrome will not allow anyone to go to a site that does not have one, so keep yourself updated on the technological changes occurring. We’ll keep you updated, also!
